Argemone Oil: Overview
Argemone oil is extracted from the seeds of the Mexican poppy (Argemone mexicana), a spiny wild herb belonging to the Papaveraceae family. The oil is yellow to dark amber in color and has a strong, bitter odor. Though used in traditional medicinal systems for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties, argemone oil is highly toxic and must be used with extreme caution.In small, externally applied doses, it has been used in folk medicine to treat skin infections, wounds, eczema, scabies, and joint pain. The oil’s strong alkaloids—especially sanguinarine and dihydrosanguinarine—are potent bioactive agents that can kill microbes and reduce inflammation. However, internal consumption is dangerous and can cause epidemic dropsy, a serious condition affecting the heart and liver.Due to its toxicity, argemone oil is generally used only externally and under qualified supervision, making it a controversial yet historically significant traditional remedy.
