Bacillus Thuringiensis Probiotic Powder: Overview

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a naturally occurring, spore-forming bacterium widely used in agriculture as a biopesticide. It produces crystal proteins (Cry and Cyt toxins) during sporulation, which are highly specific to insect pests, particularly Lepidoptera (caterpillars), Diptera (mosquitoes, flies), and Coleoptera (beetles). When ingested by susceptible insects, these toxins bind to receptors in the gut lining, causing cell lysis and death, while remaining harmless to humans, animals, beneficial insects, and the environment.

Bt-based formulations are applied as foliar sprays, soil treatments, or seed coatings, offering effective control of pests such as corn borers, cotton bollworms, and mosquito larvae. Additionally, Bt genes have been introduced into genetically modified (GM) crops like Bt cotton, Bt corn, and Bt brinjal, providing built-in resistance to major pests and reducing dependence on chemical pesticides. Its specificity, eco-friendliness, and safety make Bacillus thuringiensis one of the most important microbial agents in sustainable pest management.
