Lycopene: Overview
Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant and a naturally occurring carotenoid found in red and pink fruits and vegetables, particularly tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit. It is responsible for the red color in these foods. Lycopene has been widely studied for its potential health benefits, particularly in relation to heart health and cancer prevention.
As an antioxidant, lycopene helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which can contribute to aging and various diseases. Research suggests that it may lower the risk of certain types of cancer, particularly prostate cancer, as well as cardiovascular diseases by improving cholesterol levels and reducing inflammation.
Lycopene is more bioavailable when consumed in processed tomato products like sauces and juices, as cooking breaks down the plant's cell walls. It's generally safe to consume, but excessive supplementation may cause skin discoloration (lycopenemia), which is harmless.
