Senna Leaf Powder: Overview
Senna was first used medicinally by Arabian physicians in the 9th century AD. The plant's name is derived from the Arabic word "Sena" and the Hebrew word "cassia", which means "peeled back," a reference to its peel able bark. Senna has long been used in traditional Arabian and European medicine, primarily as a cathartic. The leaves were brewed into a tea and administered as a strong laxative. Senna is an herb, and Senna tea is made from the leaves of the Cassia Senna plant. These plants thrive in tropical areas, though some can grow in more temperate climates.
Uses and Benefits of Senna Leaf Powder
Senna powder and tea has been marketed as a constipation treatment and a “detox” tea. It’s also often used as a weight loss aid, thanks to its ability to treat constipation, it’s sometimes used short-term to treat hemorrhoids. Senna is also used for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), anal or rectal surgery, tears in the lining of the anus (anal fissures), hemorrhoids, and weight loss. While a number of studies have tested the effects of Senna in powder or capsule form, very few studies have looked at the potential health benefits of drinking Senna tea.
Constipation:Senna powder and tea are most commonly used for occasional constipation. Researchers have found that the active compounds in Senna have a strong laxative effect. They work by irritating the lining of the colon, promoting colon contractions and bowel movements. Senna also prevents water and electrolytes from being reabsorbed from the colon, which increases fluids in the intestines and softens stool.
Colonoscopy Prep:Senna has been used in conjunction with other agents for colon cleansing prior to undergoing colonoscopy. Colonoscopy is a type of medical procedure widely used in screening for colon cancer.
Other Gastrointestinal Disorders:Senna tea is sometimes used for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and bloating.
Colon Cleanse:Senna is often used to clear the bowel before diagnostic tests such as colonoscopies. Cleansing the colon is believed to improve nutrient uptake and support overall colon health.
Anti-Parasitic:Senna also works as an effective vermifuge to destroy parasites and expel worms from the intestinal tract. It works best when combined with other anthelmintic herbs (used in the treatment of roundworm), such as ginger or fennel. These herbs increase regularity and reduce the chance of bowel cramps due to Senna’s strong action.
Digestive Health:In the case of indigestion, Senna contains natural enzymes that help to restore gastric juice secretions in the stomach. Senna, if used in the proper dosage for certain periods of time, has shown potential in reducing irritability in the intestines by improving overall digestion. Senna also contains the anti-inflammatory compound resveratrol which can help to soothe inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.
Skin Health:Senna leaf powder contain essential oils and tannins that help to alleviate skin inflammation. With a strong antibacterial activity, they can be made into a compress which can be applied to wounds and burns. Acetone and ethanol - other compounds present in Senna - can fight the microorganisms that cause acne. Senna also helps to reduce sebum production and increase cell regeneration and collagen production.
