Trypsin: Overview
Trypsin is a proteolytic enzyme that plays a crucial role in the digestion of proteins. It is produced in the pancreas as an inactive precursor called trypsinogen, which is then activated in the small intestine. Once active, trypsin breaks down proteins into smaller peptides by cleaving peptide bonds at the carboxyl side of the amino acids lysine and arginine.
Trypsin is essential for the proper digestion of dietary proteins, allowing the body to absorb amino acids effectively. In medical and industrial applications, trypsin is used in wound healing to debride dead tissue, in cell culture to dissociate adherent cells, and in various biochemical research processes to digest proteins into peptides for analysis.
